A 45-year-old man is in custody, likely to be charged with the murder of a 21-year-old Gold Coast woman who died after falling from a balcony in Southport in 2013.
Police allege Titans cheerleader Breeana Robinson, who was legally blind, was thrown from an 11th-storey balcony.
Detective Inspector Brendan Smith of the Gold Coast District Criminal Investigation Branch said today’s arrest was the culmination of years of hard work by detectives.
“The investigative team has left no stone unturned in identifying the circumstances of Breeana’s death, demonstrating the passage of time is no escape for offenders,” he said.
“Whilst investigations are ongoing, it is hoped Breeana’s family get some small comfort in seeing someone been brought to account for her death.”
The man is expected to be charged later today and face Southport Magistrates Court on charges of murder, fraud, and damaging evidence with intent.
The family had been calling for an inquest into her death, which was postponed in December 2017.
In the month before her death in January 2013, Ms Robinson shared more than 1,400 text messages with her then-boyfriend Dan Shearin, several of which were submitted in court as abusive towards her.
Mr Shearin was charged and found guilty of using a carriage service to menace or harass and was sentenced to six months jail.
On appeal the sentence was found to be excessive and overturned and he was released on a good behaviour bond.
Mr Shearin wrote a “tell-all” e-book following Ms Robinson’s death.
Police have not revealed the identity of the man they have arrested today.
