A homeowner who struck a person with his car, breaking his leg, will not be charged, Tasmanian police say.

Key points:

  • The injured man suffered a broken leg and was incapacitated at the scene, while two others fled, police said
  • The driver was leaving for work early in the morning when he came across the alleged intruders
  • A family member said it was not the first time people had trespassed on the property

The homeowner drove towards the man who was “acting suspiciously” on his property in north-west Tasmania early this morning, police said.

Police said the homeowner had left his house to go to work about 5:30am, when he noticed a group of three men on his property in Ulverstone.

The men were wearing dark clothing and carrying backpacks.

Investigators say the homeowner drove towards the men in his driveway “to confront them”, striking one of the men with his car.

That man suffered a broken leg and was incapacitated at the scene, while the other two fled.

Homeowners ‘a little bit nervous’ after incident

The homeowner’s partner said they were “shaken up”.

“One male who was a bit too chubby to jump over the gate, tried to turn around and then my partner accidentally struck him with the car,” she said.

“It’s scary to think that there’s people out there that are capable of trying to do stuff like, especially at 5:30 in the morning.

“I think my partner is quite shaken-up by it, as you would be.

“I will be a little bit nervous tonight because you never know what anyone’s going to do.”

The woman’s grandmother told the ABC the family were disturbed by the incident, and that they had previously had intruders on their property.

“[The driver] seems to be alright, but only time will tell,” she said.

The injured man is being treated at the North West Regional Hospital, and police are still searching for the other two.

Detectives have interviewed the homeowner, but said he would not be charged.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or saw people acting suspiciously around Main Street in Ulverstone this morning is urged to call police.
