A New South Wales man accused of placing an explosive device on a car after an alleged road-rage incident has lost his bid for bail.

Ryan Sharp, 33, was this week charged with blowing up a car after a couple beeped their horn at his partner while she was in a McDonalds drive through at Warrawong in February.

Key points:

  • NSW man who allegedly blew up a car after a road rage at McDonald’s incident denied bail
  • Defence argued he should be released to care for his grandmother
  • Magistrate rejected the application because of the severity of the charges
  • Accused will face court again in May

The unoccupied car was partially destroyed when it exploded in the driveway of the couple’s Koonawarra home later in March.

Police allege the refrigerator mechanic and his partner, a 31-year-old Lake Heights woman, also stalked, intimidated and threatened the couple using a carriage service over several weeks.

The pair were arrested and charged on Tuesday after an investigation by the Fixated Persons Investigations Unit.

In Wollongong Court on Thursday Mr Sharp appeared via video link from the police cells wearing the same clothing he was arrested in two days prior.

Supported by his mother and sister in the court, Mr Sharpe blew the pair a kiss and through tears said “I love you, mum,” and “I’m sorry.”

Bail sought to care for grandmother

His defence lawyer, Sian Aldis, argued Mr Sharpe should be released so he could continue caring for his elderly grandmother, who has mobility issues.

Arguing against the submission, the police prosecutor alleged that during monitoring as part of the investigation into Mr Sharp he stayed at his grandmother’s Lurnea address “a handful of times”.

Ms Aldis also questioned the admissibility of the police facts tendered to court which claim the accused made “full and frank admissions” about obtaining the explosive device and placing it on the car.

“We don’t have transcripts or recordings to support that,” Ms Aldis said, urging the magistrate to be “cautious about how much weight you place on the police facts”.

The magistrate Chris McRobert denied Mr Sharp’s application for bail citing the gravity of the charges against him.

He is due to face court again in May.

His partner remains on bail, charged with accessory after the fact to destroy or damage property and will also appear at Wollongong court in May.

The Fixated Persons Investigations Unit was set up by NSW Police two years ago to focus on the so-called “lone actor” and “fixated person” threats and grievance-fuelled violence.
